In San Francisco it is not uncommon to live in a home that was built between 1908 and 1930. Many of these homes have retained their original details – traditional hardwood floors and plaster crown mouldings abound. While I love these aspects of older homes, and the history they represent, I don’t love having traditional furnishings throughout my entire home. I used to find a mix of traditional and modern decor to be disjointed and jarring but, more and more, I have started to love an eclectic mix. There is something about the contrast of traditional structural details with a few strategic modern furnishings that brings an older home into the modern era. The look requires a certain amount of finesse; there has to be a balance between old and new. Here are a few of my favorite examples.
