While my plans for turning my daughter’s sunroom into a pillow room retreat have been in the works for months, alas, the contractor’s schedule does not usually align with my own. So it’s taken much longer than I had hoped, but the wheels are in motion. Since this west-facing room gets a lot of sunlight, getting the curtains up was the first order of business.
I borrowed a trick from Sarah Richardson, that I stored away in my brain years ago. Sarah had embellished simple curtains by adding a pom pom trim and ever since, I’ve been looking for an opportunity to do the same. Once we decided to give this little sunroom a makeover, it was the perfect spot. Because of the sun exposure and our past experience with fading striped curtains, I knew prints were not a wise investment. We are also keeping a strict budget so fancying up some Ikea curtains was the perfect solution, especially since we have three large, arched windows to cover, requiring five panels. I chose simple and slightly sheer white curtains, which were priced right at under $20/pair. If you recall, I quickly snatched up yards of this hot pink pom pom trim at the Discount Fabric Store.
The upgrade required little work: ironing and hemming the curtains (which were 2” too long), pinning the trim carefully on the edge (making sure not to sew over the rod opening) and a little basic zig-zag sewing. I managed to complete two pairs in about three hours. Though the trim is probably meant to be sewn to reveal only the pom poms, I wanted a little more pizzaz (and less work) so I left the trim exposed. Now onto the pillows!
