We love hearing from readers and tackling their design dilemmas. The latest: how to incorporate the existing white Pottery Barn dresser and bookcase from a nursery into a big boy’s room. Our reader didn’t want to use a white bed (and we agreed) so we suggested adding some color with this fort bed from Room & Board. It comes in a variety of colors; we love it in navy.
To give the dresser a more masculine look, we’d change the drawer pulls. Hand-painted navy pulls would easily tie in with the navy bed. We are partial to adding more natural elements like rope, leather, brass or bronze pulls. It’s a simple and affordable fix.
We love the idea of adding wallpaper to the back of the bookcase. It’s a great place to add interest with a bold print and in this case, to tie into the navy bed. Some of our favorite wallpapers are (from top to bottom) Serena and Lily’s Feather and Herringbone prints and Cole & Son’s Hick Hexagon. Image Courtesy of Lonny Magazine.
Not a wallpaper fan? A simple and practical alternative would be to add storage bins. They are perfect for collecting all those trains, legos, balls etc. and easy enough for a 4-year old to clean up after himself! We like the old school look of these metal bins from Land of Nod or the kid-friendlier fabric ones — with a pull or a print.
For the final touch, pull the whole look together with graphic bedding from Dwell Studio (top) and Land of Nod (bottom) and a natural rug from Serena & Lily (top) and West Elm (bottom).

Would wallpaper work if the sides of the bookcase aren’t solid wood (mine have two slats)?
We think so. If you give it a try, we would love to see a pic!
