Despite my belief that it’s important to make a good first impression, our foyer is my least favorite space in the house. Across from the front door sits a large bench adjacent to the stairwell wall, which is the only space to place furniture against since the foyer sits between our living and dining rooms. As a result, the first thing I see are my kids backpacks, jackets, shoes, soccer balls, etc. — basically, a mess. Although the bench works well when we have large groups of people over (to dump jackets, purses, etc), I’ve noticed no one actually sits on it. I’ve even witnessed a girlfriend balance on one foot to zip up her knee-high boots (we have a no-shoe policy) next to the empty bench.
So I’ve decided my first personal project of 2016 will be to refresh my foyer. These are the images that are inspiring me.

While I love the clean look of a console table, especially the Parsons (I am writing on a Parsons desk now), we have more practical storage needs. So I am looking for a cabinet with clean lines. Here are a few options … stay tuned.
- West Elm
- Bungalow 5
- Worlds Away
